According to OpenAI’s analysis, which examined user requests between September 2025 and September 2026, Islam accounted for approximately 45% of religion-related interactions, while Christianity represented 34%.
Other religions recorded considerably smaller shares. Hinduism accounted for 4% of the requests, Judaism represented 2%, while Buddhism accounted for approximately 1%.
The research also identified a connection between religious activities and seasonal increases in online enquiries. Islam-related questions tended to increase during Ramadan and Eid celebrations, while Christianity-related interactions experienced a rise around Easter.
Understanding Religious Texts Is a Major Reason People Use ChatGPT
The analysis revealed that understanding religious texts was among the most common reasons people turned to ChatGPT for religious information.
Approximately 22 million religion-related requests every week focused on understanding religious writings and teachings.
Another 16 million weekly requests concerned the meaning of religious practices and celebrations. Similar numbers involved questions about religious beliefs, finding meaning in life and seeking spiritual guidance.
Christianity-related interactions showed a particularly strong interest in biblical interpretation. Nearly half of the Christian-related questions involved understanding passages of Scripture, while approximately 13% focused on worship, sermons and church practices.
These findings suggest that many Christians are using artificial intelligence to explore biblical teachings, understand difficult passages and learn more about their faith.
OpenAI Says AI Should Support Rather Than Replace Faith
Commenting on the findings, OpenAI highlighted that people are increasingly using artificial intelligence to deepen their understanding of religious beliefs rather than replace their existing faith practices.
The company emphasised that AI should serve as a supportive resource for religious communities while preserving the importance of human relationships, spiritual leadership and established religious institutions.
In its report, OpenAI explained that religious life is built around shared traditions, personal convictions and relationships between people. Although artificial intelligence can assist believers in exploring their faith, it cannot replace the role of religious communities and spiritual leaders.
The company also cautioned against treating AI as an authority on religious truth or a substitute for genuine spiritual guidance.
Instead, it believes that artificial intelligence can provide useful tools to help people understand their beliefs, practise their faith and connect more meaningfully with others who share similar religious convictions.
Technology Is Creating New Opportunities for Religious Learning
The findings offer an interesting perspective on how technology is influencing religious education and personal Bible study.
For Christians, platforms such as ChatGPT provide opportunities to explore biblical passages, ask questions about Christian teachings, understand historical events in Scripture and research different theological perspectives.
Similarly, people from other religious backgrounds can use AI tools to explore their sacred texts, religious traditions and spiritual practices.
However, the growing use of artificial intelligence for religious enquiries also highlights the importance of responsible use. Users should verify information, consult credible religious sources and seek guidance from qualified spiritual leaders when dealing with important theological questions.
As artificial intelligence continues to develop, its role in religious learning is likely to attract greater attention.
The central message from OpenAI is that technology should make religious knowledge more accessible while strengthening, rather than replacing, the human connections that remain central to religious life.
